One Spouse Needs Care, One Spouse Doesn’t: What can they do?
For many families the solution to this scene would be a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC). These communities were designed with long-term care in mind. For one, they offer all forms of care, so as you need more care, you can get it without needing to move to another facility. Additionally though, CCRCs are recommended for couples because they can live in the same home even if one requires extra care.
However, we met a married couple (one who needed care and one who didn’t) who was opposed to the idea of living in a community. They liked their neighborhood and wanted to stay there. Finding an adult family home was the only option.
Of course the spouse that needed care qualified, but they feared the healthy spouse would not since she didn’t need care — this was something they were especially concerned about as the legal limit for residents in an adult family home is six. Additionally, they worried that if the wife could move in, that the cost would be too much on their income and they were already discussing what sort of agreement they could come to with the staff when we stepped in.
We managed to get the healthy spouse to room in the adult family home as a “boarder” at a reduced rate to share the room with her husband. In addition, she was considered a resident with 3 meals a day and access to all the amenities and, best of all, she could be with her husband.
This agreement came with the additional perk: should the healthy spouse need care in the future, she can continue to remain at the home. This worked out extraordinarily well for the couple! We even checked back in with them and the healthy spouse mentioned how she was excited to live in a home that had cable.
If you or your loved one needs care, we’re happy to help you find an adult family home or any of the other senior care options!
