Helping an Elder Find Senior Housing

A Challenging Decision: Separate Senior Housing

This couple reached out to us with unique needs. The husband was independent, while the wife faced mild dementia and other medical issues. Like many in his situation, the husband had become the primary caregiver. Caring for someone with dementia is challenging, even for professionals, let alone someone untrained and suddenly thrust into the role.

The stress took a toll on their relationship, resulting in frequent arguments. The husband was struggling emotionally, grieving the gradual loss of the person he loved, while managing the practical demands of caregiving. It was clear that they needed senior housing, not only for the wife’s well-being but also to restore harmony to their marriage.

Finding the Right Fit for Her Needs

The wife was initially reluctant to live apart from her husband but understood that she required full-time care. She had a colostomy bag, needed several medications daily, and required round-the-clock medical attention.

Her main concern was location—she wanted to stay close to her children and husband. She also desired a comfortable, upscale assisted living community capable of supporting her as her dementia progressed.

We suggested three options, and Aegis of Shoreline emerged as the ideal choice. With a nurse boasting over 30 years of geriatric care experience, the community could provide the care she needed while preserving her dignity. Its location near family also eased the transition.

Finding Happiness in Separate Living

Although the couple now lives separately, they are much happier. The wife receives the consistent care she needs, and the husband can focus on his own well-being, knowing she is in good hands.

If you’re worried about being separated from your spouse, know that every senior living journey is different—this story is just one example. While separate housing is sometimes the best solution, many couples prefer to live together, and there are options that make this possible.

Senior Living Together: Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs)

For couples needing different levels of care, Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) are often the best solution. CCRCs offer multiple care options—including independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing care—all within the same community.

This type of community ensures that couples can remain together, even if one partner eventually needs higher levels of care. If you and your spouse want to stay together while preparing for future care needs, a CCRC could be the right fit for you.
