What to Look for in Senior Care Communities
When planning for senior care, finding the right senior care communities is essential for ensuring your loved one’s happiness, safety, and well-being. At Concierge Care Advisors, we understand how daunting this process can be. In 2011, we conducted a blind survey to identify the amenities and features most valued in assisted living facilities and senior care communities. The insights we gained can help guide your senior care journey.
Top-Ranked Amenities in Senior Care Communities
Our survey revealed the top three most desired services among Baby Boomers (ages 45+):
- Assistance with Daily Needs
Support with activities of daily living (ADLs) like bathing, dressing, and eating is a critical component of senior care. Families want to ensure their loved ones receive personalized and compassionate care. - Community Meals
Shared dining experiences foster a sense of community and help seniors maintain balanced nutrition in a social environment. - In-Room Emergency Call Systems
Safety is paramount. Access to emergency call systems provides peace of mind for residents and their families.
Insights into Recreational Activities and Transportation
Interestingly, our survey showed that recreational activities ranked higher than transportation services among prospective residents of senior care communities. While transportation to grocery stores or religious services is important, seniors emphasized their desire for onsite entertainment and engagement.
Key Findings:
- Preferred Transportation: Community-owned shuttles were the top choice, suggesting that seniors prioritize ease and convenience over personal driving.
- Recreational Preferences: “Trips outside the facility” and “onsite outdoor activities” ranked highly, demonstrating a desire for both independence and enriching experiences within the community.
These findings underscore the importance of choosing a senior care community that feels like home while offering opportunities for connection, relaxation, and adventure.
Balancing Independence and Support in Senior Care Communities
Many seniors want to maintain their independence while receiving the care they need. This balance is reflected in lower-ranked amenities like 24-hour medical staff and security. While safety and medical care are crucial, seniors don’t want their new home to feel like a hospital. Instead, they value a community atmosphere that provides comfort and autonomy.
