Veterans Day Appreciation: More Than a Holiday

As Veterans Day approaches, I am grateful for the opportunity to express my appreciation to those who have served and protected our nation. Without the selfless dedication of our military troops, the safety and security we enjoy would be out of reach.

Although Veterans Day is an annual event, honoring our veterans should happen every day. We owe our freedom and quality of life to the sacrifices of those willing to serve. Many nations are torn apart by conflict and war, but thanks to our military’s dedication, we can live our lives without constant fear.

Even when we experience life’s frustrations—like traffic jams, job struggles, or cracked phones—our freedom to improve our circumstances is something worth recognizing. These are the privileges our troops protect by ensuring that we live in a peaceful and secure environment.

It’s been nearly 100 years since a major war took place on American soil. Events like Pearl Harbor and 9/11 remind us that the fight for freedom is ongoing, but we are fortunate that our troops stand ready to defend us. Their commitment ensures that we continue to live comfortably, securely, and with hope for the future.

A Personal Story: Honoring My Father’s Service

My appreciation for veterans is also rooted in my family’s legacy. My father was a medic in the military, later becoming head of the operating room at Madigan Army Medical Center. He often shared stories of his time in service and the good it did for him, even though he hadn’t anticipated the path it would place him on.

During one off-base social outing, my father met my mother, who was raised in Tacoma. That chance encounter eventually led to their marriage and ten children—one born every year for a decade! (In fact, five of us were born in November, so I’ll leave it to you to guess when his leave was scheduled.) After the fifth child, my father realized he needed to stay local to help raise the family.

While my father has since passed away, I continue to honor him by supporting other veterans. It is with deep gratitude that I thank our troops, military families, and veterans for their service to this nation. Living in a free country is truly a privilege, and I am forever grateful to those who have made it possible.
