As we age, it is normal for our memory to undergo changes. I know when I go through busy and stressful times, I find myself not being as sharp or quick with memory items as I have in the past. I usually know this is a sign of me worrying too much or not getting enough sleep. I have developed a few tricks over the years that seem to help and am happy to share. However, I am
not a medical doctor so always consult with a healthcare professional with concerns about your
memory or cognitive function. Remember that certain underlying medical conditions or
medications can affect the memory, and this should always be discussed with a physician.
One remedy that has worked for me is adding a tablespoon of MCT Oil to my morning coffee.
MCT Oil, also known as Medium-chain triglyceride oil has gained popularity for its potential
cognitive benefits including claims of improving memory and brain function. MCT oil is a type of
dietary fat that is metabolized differently than long-chain triglycerides, the predominant type of
fat in the diet. MCTs are rapidly absorbed and converted into ketones, which can serve as an
alternative fuel source for the brain. Some studies suggest that the ketogenic effect of MCT oil
may have potential benefits for brain health and cognitive function. Ketones are thought to
provide a more efficient and readily available energy source for the brain which may be
beneficial in conditions associated with cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Keep in mind though that individual responses to MCT oil may vary, and the effects may depend
on factors such as dosage, duration of use, and the presence of underlying health conditions.
Also, MCT oil is high in fat and calories so it should be used in moderation and part of a healthy
balanced diet. More research needs to be done on MCT oil to determine its effectiveness for
memory loss and cognitive impairment. As mentioned above, always check with your doctor
before starting something like MCT Oil, but there are some other helpful hints I have found in
the past that work also.
Other strategies that will help maintain and improve memory function are to always engage in
activities that challenge your brain like puzzles, games or learning new skills. Regular physical
exercise will move blood to the brain. Eating a healthy diet high in antioxidants and omega-3
fatty acids can also benefit memory. In my opinion, one of the most important tips is to get
enough sleep. Adequate sleep is essential for memory consolidation and overall cognitive
function. Most experts agree that 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night is vital to our overall
health. I mentioned before that lack of sleep and stress can always signal me to be more
mindful of taking care of my body and mind. It is really important to manage our stress as
chronic stress can negatively impact memory and cognitive function. Practicing stress reduction
techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga or spending time in nature will
dramatically improve stress.
Remember that it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional with concerns about your
memory or cognitive function. There could be underlying medical conditions or medications
affecting the memory.
