How To Help Senior Veterans for Independence Day

Inquire Today

By Nicole Ames, Certified Senior Advisor at Concierge Care Advisors

For many of us Independence Day is a time for celebration. Unfortunately for some, this time of year can be met with fear. Many of our seniors have served in the military. The fireworks we use trigger the memories of being in active duty, the smell, the sounds and the sight can cause anxiety and fear. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common to many of our senior veterans. There are some tips and
tricks to help folks get through this day.

• Ensuring a noise canceling activity, such has watching a movie or using ear plugs while reading a book
• Knowing the schedule of the fireworks
• Creating a safe space within your home
• Make an appointment to speak to a mental health professional
• Communicating with your friends and family throughout the day/night
• Reminding yourself of who you are and where you are

If you know a senior veteran, checking in on him or her around and on Independence Day can bring
comfort to them knowing that they are not alone. This act of kindness will help with the potential stress
of the holiday.
