The Rising Threat of Scams Targeting Seniors
Seniors lose billions of dollars annually to scams, with criminals using increasingly sophisticated methods to exploit vulnerable adults. From fake phone calls to deceptive emails, scammers prey on trust and confusion to steal money and personal information.
Even those who are aware of scams can fall victim under the right circumstances. I once lost $500 in an eBay scam because I was distracted. For one senior with cognitive decline, the stakes were much higher—she lost over $10,000 to a scammer pretending to be her grandson.
It’s clear that scams can happen to anyone. The key is to stay vigilant and informed.

Common Scams to Watch Out For
1. Imposter Scams
Scammers pose as family members, claiming they need money for emergencies like bail or hospital bills.
- Red Flag: Requests for money via wire transfers or gift cards.
2. Email and Tech Support Scams
Emails claiming to charge you for services or pop-ups warning of a “virus” can lure victims into providing personal information.
- Red Flag: Requests to confirm payment or provide banking information.
3. Investment and Get-Rich-Quick Schemes
Unscrupulous “advisors” promise big returns in exchange for upfront payments.
- Red Flag: High-pressure sales tactics and unverifiable credentials.

- Ignore fake USPS or government agency requests for personal details.
Screen Phone Calls:
