Holiday Activities for Seniors: Simple Joys and Special Memories
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because it opens into the winter season and the December holidays of Christmas, Chanukah, and Kwanzaa. Celebrating Thanksgiving reminds me of the blessings I share with family and friends and the importance of carrying joy, love, and kindness throughout the holiday season.
Today, I received a holiday note from a family caregiver updating friends and family on her mother’s year. She titled it “Claire and Colleen 2019,” and it was wonderful to read about her mom’s resilience and joy. Her mom had overcome health issues, graduated from the wheelchair to a walker, and now spends her days singing, playing Scrabble, enjoying time with friends, and spending time with family. This heartfelt note, along with photos, was a simple but meaningful reminder of the love and support that surrounds us.
During the holidays, small gestures can bring joy to seniors. Even simple holiday activities for seniors—especially for those with limited mobility or living alone—can create treasured memories and a sense of connection. Whether it’s stopping by with groceries or having a cozy tea and chat, small acts of kindness make a difference. Here are some of my favorite holiday activities for seniors to share the joy of the season.
Holiday Activities for Seniors to Enjoy at Home
These simple, meaningful activities can make the holidays feel special without being overwhelming:
- Make a Holiday Wreath: Spend time crafting a holiday wreath together to brighten up their home.
- Decorate Together: Help your elder loved one decorate their home or invite them to help you with yours.
- Share Holiday Stories: Encourage kids to ask grandparents about the holidays of their youth. It’s a wonderful way to connect generations.
- Play Games Together: Simple card games, board games, and Scrabble are great for all ages.
- Listen to Favorite Music: Playing their favorite tunes or singing holiday songs together can bring back happy memories.
- Watch a Holiday Movie: Plan a cozy movie night with popcorn, blankets, and a feel-good film.
- Cook and Feast Together: Cooking as a family can be a fun way to enjoy each other’s company and share favorite recipes.
- Help with Holiday Cards: Ask your elder loved one to help write or address holiday cards. It’s a great way to involve them in holiday traditions.
- Seek Their Opinion on Gifts: If you’re shopping online, ask for their thoughts and opinions on gifts. It’s a simple way to make them feel included.
Holiday Activities for Seniors Outside the Home
If your elder loved one is able and willing, these outings can add joy and variety to the season:
- Take a Family Walk: Enjoy the holiday lights in the neighborhood or take a stroll through a local park.
- Visit a Decorated Mall: Head to the mall early to avoid crowds and admire the decorations together.
- Enjoy a Meal Out: Share a holiday meal at a favorite restaurant.
- Attend a Holiday Show: Take in a local holiday show, such as The Nutcracker or the Seattle Men’s Chorus ‘Tis the Season.
The Best Gift: Time and Connection
During the holiday season, the best gift we can give our elder loved ones is time and connection. Socialization and shared activities bring joy and a sense of belonging, helping to make the holidays meaningful.
